Zaria Forman’s artwork became the foundation for a home that supports both creativity and everyday life. I researched her large scale pastel drawings, artistic process, and ability to transform distant glacial landscapes into emotional experiences. I also studied the limitations of the narrow Georgetown townhouse, including its compressed width, vertical circulation, and limited openness. These conditions shaped the organization of the home, studio, gallery, and office, creating a clear relationship between private living and public creative work.

The concept Dualities developed from contrasts found in both Forman’s artwork and the existing architecture, including vastness and intimacy, warmth and coolness, and solid and open space. The upper studio and gallery are bright, flexible, and filled with natural light, allowing room for large artwork and client visits. The living spaces below feel warmer, quieter, and more grounded. Framed views, openings between floors, and a layered material palette connect both environments, allowing art and daily life to coexist without one overwhelming the other.
